Vepa is revolutionising colour with Hemp Carbon: The first hemp chair coloured with biocarbon makes its debut

Adding colour to furniture has traditionally involved compromises in sustainability. Coatings, lacquers and pigments make materials more difficult to separate, preventing genuine circularity. With Hemp Carbon, Vepa the furniture factory is now presenting its Hemp chair collection in a new finish. Plantics, Vepa’s long-standing partner and a pioneer in material innovation, has further developed the bio-resin already used to manufacture the Hemp collection into a Carbon Capture Composite. By adding carbon derived from recycled wood, the material acquires a dark, natural colour without the need for any additional coatings.

With this latest innovation, Vepa is once again fulfilling its commitment to advancing Dutch Design as a driving force in circular furniture design and providing the industry with visionary new ideas.
A bio-based material with natural colour
The Hemp chair collection is made entirely from biological, renewable raw materials and finished with natural linseed oil. Fibres from locally grown hemp plants are processed into a dense, naturally brown mat that forms the base material for the seat shell.
The enhanced Carbon Capture Composite gives the material a darker, natural colour without additional coatings or additives. The result is a near mono-material made entirely from bio-based raw materials. A proportion of the CO₂ absorbed during the plants’ growth remains stored in the chair over the long term, helping to reduce emissions. At the end of its life cycle, the chair can be shredded and remanufactured into a new chair without any loss of quality.

For architects and designers, Hemp Carbon offers new opportunities to create more welcoming and individual office environments with a natural character. Its integral colour combines the warmth of natural fibres with greater depth and intensity.
