With THE EDITIONS, Austrian lighting manufacturer Zumtobel introduces a series of lighting solutions developed in close collaboration with leading international architecture and design studios. This innovation-driven platform extends beyond the standard product portfolio and is aimed at project partners who consider light an integral component of their architectural concepts.
THE EDITIONS provides a framework for creative exchange and collaborative development. The luminaires in the THE EDITIONS series respond to a wide range of spatial requirements, where lighting must perform infrastructural functions, allow for individual control, and deliver precisely balanced visual quality. Whether the freestanding task luminaire SKENA, the linear pendant luminaire IZURA, the tubular luminaire SOLENA, or the compact table luminaire TALUNA, the collection demonstrates Zumtobel’s conceptual versatility and technical expertise.
A defining feature of the collection is its collaboration with renowned architectural studios such as Herzog & de Meuron and BAID Architektur. The SOLENA luminaire, for example, was developed for the large-scale office building HORTUS by Herzog & de Meuron, combining architectural integration, sustainable performance, and technical functionality in a seamless solution. As an integral part of the architectural concept, the luminaire contributes to monitoring the indoor climate without visible devices or cabling.
The development of the SKENA task luminaire focused on creating a functional yet discreet solution that meets the demands of contemporary workplaces. The Hamburg-based practice BAID Architektur worked closely with Zumtobel to develop a solution that satisfies regulatory requirements while maintaining a high level of design quality. The result is SKENA – a luminaire distinguished by its high indirect light component, providing uniform illumination in open-plan office environments.

With the refined THE EDITIONS box, Zumtobel highlights its collaborative design approach with architects and designers. The box presents the luminaire design process as a research-driven exploration and includes large-format posters illustrating the design philosophy and creative dialogue. An accompanying booklet provides further insight into the decision-making process and product development. THE EDITIONS reflects Zumtobel’s philosophy of treating architecture, light, and technology as inseparable disciplines. The company invites creative partners to engage as development collaborators and to create innovative lighting concepts that enhance architectural projects worldwide.
