ICONIC AWARDS 2026: Emerging Perspectives on Architecture and Interior Design
How can architecture and design respond to changing social, environmental and spatial conditions? The winners of the ICONIC AWARDS 2026 offer a wide range of answers. Under the theme “Emerging Perspectives”, the German Design Council brings together projects and practices that respond to the demands of the present through distinct approaches to architecture, interior design and product innovation.
Around 800 entries from more than 45 countries underscore the international significance of the ICONIC AWARDS. A total of 45 projects have received the Best of Best distinction. The award-winning projects range from the transformation of existing buildings and new approaches to materials and construction to interiors that combine spaces for community and retreat with a precise engagement with material, light and use.

Five Perspectives on Architectural Practice
The five special distinctions for 2026 highlight different roles and approaches within the international architectural debate. They recognise individuals, practices, projects and clients whose work is making a distinctive contribution to contemporary architecture and design.
Architects of the Year are Tiantian Xu and DnA_Design and Architecture. The Chinese practice consistently develops architecture from its context, taking place, use and their interplay as the starting point of each design. Milan-based Studio Wok is named Interior Designers of the Year for an approach that understands interior design as the shaping of living environments, with a strong focus on material integrity, craftsmanship and atmospheric quality. TEN receives the Creator of the Year distinction for a practice that combines design, research and knowledge exchange through project-based, interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Architects’ Client of the Year distinction goes to the Zheshui Village Committee, highlighting the role of committed clients and their collaboration with architects and users. ABF-LAB receives the Debut Work of the Year distinction for the Maison du Département des Solidarités in Langon. Here, bioclimatic strategies, low-tech principles and construction in timber, straw and clay form a coherent approach in which sustainable building is understood as an integral part of architectural quality.
Architecture Shaped by Context
Rather than sharing a particular formal language, the award-winning projects are connected by the way they respond to their respective conditions. Spatial quality emerges from a precise engagement with place, material, use and atmosphere. Architecture is understood not through the finished building alone, but also through the processes, partnerships and forms of responsibility that underpin it.
